Why he might be annoying:

During his one season with the Tigers, his ERA was 12.66.
He got a second chance with Detroit, but was cut after getting into a fight with Hank Greenberg during spring training (1934).
The Eephus pitch was named by outfielder Maurice Van Robays, who said, 'Eephus ain't no word, and that ain't no pitch.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He and St. Louis shortstop Marty Marion came up with the idea of using receipts from the All-Star Game to fund a pension for retired players.
He developed the Eephus pitch when he was forced to change his delivery due to injuries from being hit with two loads of buckshot in a hunting accident (1941).
Both of his legs had to be amputated below the knee due to circulatory problems caused by the hunting accident (1972).
Despite the amputations, he remained an active golfer into his old age.
