The Resume

    (July 17, 1929-November 2, 1997)
    Born in Bonham, Texas
Shortstop for the Cincinnati Redlegs (1951-60), Milwaukee Braves (1961-64), and New York Mets (1965-66)
Interim Manager for the Milwaukee Brewers (1972) and New York Mets (1975)
    Scout for the Montreal Expos
National League All Star shortstop, 1957-58
Gold Glove winner, 1957 (MLB), 1958-59 (NL)

Why he might be annoying:

Comparisons between him and Wally Cox/'Mr. Peepers' had to be embarrassing.
    An infielder wearing glasses?
He is one of 14 players to have played over 2,000 games without ever making it to the postseason.
With that body, he was not a threat for the long ball, and proved it.
He was forced into both his managing jobs when the manager was fired, and went back to coaching when a permanent manager was hired.
He made the 1957 All-Star team because Redlegs' fans stuffed the ballot boxes--seven Cincinnati starters overall were voted in that summer.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was one of the best fielding shortstops in National League history.
He was traded to the Braves two years after their last World Series from the Reds, who would win the National League pennant.
Reds fans remember the 1961 trade because it brought pitcher Joe Jay to Cincinnati. He would win twenty games that season and in 1962.
While not a power hitter, he was an excellent contact hitter and was skilled with sacrifice hitting and bunting.
In 1965, he was probably the best player the Mets had--by 1966, he was put in charge of mentoring his replacement, Bud Harrelson.
By all accounts, he spent his final year preparing Harrelson well, even though he took his job. His dedication to the team led to his being selected as a minor league manager for the Mets two years later.
Considering his career accomplishments, the term 'Looks may be deceiving' fits well for him.
