Two of his male lovers committed suicide (one hanged himself in prison after a triple murder spree, the other in their apartment).
He had connections to the Baader-Meinhof gang (a terrorist organization).

He directed 43 films in a 16 year period (including a fifteen-hour TV miniseries).
He initiated a renaissance of the films of Douglas Sirk.
He was the driving force in the New German Cinema movement.
Not only did he direct his films, he also wrote, edited, acted in and composed some of the music for his films.
He was the voice of social underdogs (immigrants, homosexuals, working class people, etc).
His films often revolve around female characters.
