Why he might be annoying:

    During his service in the Vietnam War, he served in the division that contained a unit involved in the infamous My Lai Massacre.
    While he insists it is not his job or his place to discuss the politics of the Vietnam War, his works seems to pass commentary that is often criticizing of the quagmire.
    He was a target of right-wingers.
    He is close friends with fellow outspoken anti-war activist and author Ron Kovic.

Why he might not be annoying:

    Upon completion of his tour of duty, he attended graduate school at Harvard.
    In his novels, he employs 'Verisimilitude,' a blur between fiction and reality.
    His works have been praised for exposing the futility of the Vietnam War while honoring the sacrifice the troops gave in spite of danger.
    'The Things They Carried' has been a staple of high school and college literature around the world.
