Military Personnel

The Resume

    (May 13, 1939- )
    Born in Cleveland, Ohio
US Army Colonel and Green Beret
Served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War
Received the Medal of Honor or his heroic actions in Vietnam on July 18, 1965 (March 3, 2023)

Why he might be annoying:

    He went on Phil Donahue.
He was twice passed over for the Medal of Honor prior to his eventually receiving it.
Both times he was nominated prior, the paperwork relating to his nomination mysteriously disappeared.
There is ongoing debate - including between his family members and US Army leadership - that the paperwork was deliberately not processed because he was black (although he did receive the Silver Star and a Purple Heart after his heroism).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was one of the first Black officers to join the Special Forces.
He commanded a team of inexperienced South Vietnamese, along with Special Forces Soldiers, against the insurgent Vietcong.
He selflessly led a charge to neutralize enemy emplacements, and engaged in hand-to-hand combat to prevent the capture of three American soldiers, saving their lives in the process.
He sustained multiple gunshot and grenade fragment wounds during the 19-hour battle and refused to leave the battlefield until his men were safely removed (July 18, 1965).
He saved the life of a fellow soldier who was stuck in an overturned and burning fuel truck - pulling the driver out moments before it exploded (December 16, 1968). He received the Soldier’s Medal for this act.
He is one of only four service members in U.S. military history (as of 2023) to receive both the Soldier's Medal and the Medal of Honor.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame in 2019.
There is historical precedent to suggest that he was denied the Medal of Honor for years due to prejudice.
The push to get his case reviewed took over a decade and involved a large network of veterans and military family members.
Following his military career, he published the Metro Herald newspaper for 30 years in Alexandria, Virginia.
