Why he might be annoying:

He was convicted of assault with intent to kill (1957).
In 'Soul on Ice' he defended rape as 'an insurrectionary act.'
After being charged with assault following a shootout with Oakland police, he jumped bail and fled to Algeria (1968).
In Algeria, he organized his fellow criminals/revolutionaries into an auto theft ring.
He became a born-again Christian, flirted with Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church and finally converted to Mormonism.
He was convicted of cocaine possession and burglary (1988).

Why he might not be annoying:

He returned to the US, telling reporters he expected to be treated fairly by the American justice system (1975).
His faith in the justice system was rewarded as attempted murder charges were dropped and he was sentenced to probation for assault.
After experiencing Communism while on the run in Cuba and North Korea, he became a political conservative who endorsed Ronald Reagan.
He was nearly beaten to death by a fellow cocaine addict (1994).
