Collected fairy tales and published them in 'Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals, or: Tales of Mother Goose' (1697)
Tales included 'Sleeping Beauty,' 'Little Red Riding Hood,' 'Cinderella,' 'Puss 'n' Boots' and 'Bluebeard'

Why he might be annoying:

He was a tax collector for the city of Paris.
He sucked up to King Louis XIV.
He used his influence to get his brother hired to design a wing of the Louvre.
When he was 44, he married a 19-year-old.
He was overshadowed by the Brothers Grimm as a popularizer of fairy tales.

Why he might not be annoying:

He successfully argued in favor of keeping the Tuileries Gardens in Paris open to the public instead of restricted to the nobility.
He lost his position with the French government when his patron fired him and gave the job to his own son instead.
The Brothers Grimm 'rewrote' several of his tales.
He introduced several fairy tales that have remained popular since the 17th century.
