    After the 1996 Atlanta Olympics he declared, 'Anyone sees me near a boat again, they can shoot me.'
    He broke his leg while golfing, then drove 75 miles home to avoid missing a football (soccer) game on TV (June, 2009).

    He achieved Olympic success despite being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (1992) and diabetes (1997).
    He raised 1.8 million pounds for charity running in the London marathon (2006).
