Why he might be annoying:

He threw spitballs, scuffballs and mudballs.
He bet Giants owner Horace Stoneham $200 that he could strike out Willie Mays in the All-Star Game (1956) and won by throwing 'the biggest spitball you ever saw.'
To scuff balls, he had a rasp welded to his ring and noted, 'It was as though I had my own tool bench out there with me.'
He said 'I never threw the spitter. Well, maybe once or twice when I needed to get a guy out really bad.'
His best pitching year was overshadowed by the Mickey Mantle-Roger Maris home run duel (1961).

His baseball career was interrupted when he was drafted by the Army.
He was nicknamed 'The Chairman of the Board' for his ability to remain in command in high-pressure situations.
He won the Cy Young Award and World Series MVP (1961).
He set a record with 10 World Series victories.
He made a commercial in which he debated Salvador Dali about whether a knuckleball or screwball is easier to throw.
