Wrote 'The Lottery and Other Stories (1949),' 'The Bird's Nest (1954),' 'The Haunting of Hill House (1959),' 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962)' and 'Come Along with Me (published posthumously, 1968)'

Why she might be annoying:

She was very overweight for most of her life.
She smoked four packs of unfiltered Pall Mall cigarettes a day.
She became extremely paranoid, refusing to leave her bedroom in her final days.
Her short story, 'The Lottery,' is required reading in many high schools.
Her novel, 'The Haunting of Hill House,' was made into a terrible movie 'The Haunting' (1999).

Why she might not be annoying:

She is considered one of the great modern horror writers.
Her twisted horror stories often feature strong female characters.
The New Yorker magazine received more hate mail than ever before, after publishing 'The Lottery' (1948).
Her husband was unfaithful, which contributed to her mental problems.
She died at age 48.
'The Haunting of Hill House' was also made into a very good movie ('The Haunting,' 1963).
