    He secured his first PGA Tour win in a strange way in the 1952 Jacksonville Open as Sam Snead forfeited while the score was tied up.
    He had a baseball contract offer to play for the New York Yankees but he opted to stick to golf instead.
    He lost to Arnold Palmer in the 1958 Masters Tournament by one stroke.
    He lost his only Senior PGA Tour playoff to Don January in the 1981 Michelob-Egypt Temple Senior Classic.

    He used to have good baseball skills as a youth.
    He served in World War II with the U.S. Coast Guard.
    His 1955 PGA Championship victory gave him the distinction of being the fourth golfer after Walter Hagen, Olin Dutra and Byron Nelson to secure a win in the final match with a qualifier win as he beat Cary Middlecoff, 4 & 3.
    He beat Sam Snead in the 1957 Masters Tournament as he came from behind in the final round by three strokes.
    He held the Masters Tournament record for appearances with 49 for a few years until Arnold Palmer stepped in to play in his 50th appearance.
    He was of Italian descent.
