The Resume

    (June 26, 1878-May 15, 1933)
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Birth name was Ernest Thayson Torrance-Thomson
Appeared in the films ‘Tol'able David (1921),’ ‘Broken Chains (1922),’ ‘The Covered Wagon (1923),’ ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923),’ ‘Mantrap (1926)’ ‘The King of Kings (1927),’ ‘Steamboat Bill Jr.’ (1928), ‘Untamed (1929),’ ‘Fighting Caravans (1931)’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes’ (1932)
Portrayed Captain Hook in the silent ‘Peter Pan’ (1924)

Why he might be annoying:

His IMDb bio described him as ‘the man you loved to hiss.’
In addition to dropping Thomson from his hyphenated surname, he randomly changed the ‘a’ in Torrance to an ‘e.’
He survived the advent of talkies, only to die during post-production for ‘I Cover the Waterfront,’ before he could make much of a mark in the new medium.

Why he might not be annoying:

He emigrated with his brother from Scotland to the US prior to World War I.
He was a touring opera singer with his brother, but vocal problems caused him to switch to drama.
He won critical acclaim on the Broadway stage in ‘Modest Suzanne’ and ‘The Night Boat,’ the latter which won him a movie contract.
He was typecast as villains, but showed that he was adept comedy, holding his own with the likes of Buster Keaton and Lon Chaney.
He fell ill on a boat bound for Europe and was rushed back to a New York hospital, where he died during an operation to remove gallstones.
His portrayal of Captain Hook in the Betty Bronson Peter Pan was so definitive that Disney animator Frank Thomas used it as a model for the 1953 cartoon version.
