Why he might be annoying:

He lost when he ran for mayor of Los Angeles in 1953.
He later ran for a State Assembly seat and lost that, too.
He claims that, when he was a child, his father told him: 'If I ever hear of you running from a fight, I’ll give you a worse licking when you get home. If they’re too big, get a club and knock them down to your size' (damn).
He was one of the first athletes to actively try and translate his sports celebrity into a movie career.
Most of his roles in films were ascended extras at best (usually going uncredited).

He won the 1928 World Marathon Dance Champion contest.
As a prizefighter he once fought 'Packy East' (later known as Bob Hope).
He acted in nearly fifty episodes of Gunsmoke.
He found work as a corrections officer in the 1950's.
