The Resume

    (June 11, 1937-March 2, 2022)
    Born in St. Petersburg, Florida
Portrayed Nathan Bookman on Good Times (1975-79)
Portrayed Uncle Louie on Kenan and Kel
Acted in 'A Man Called Adam (1966),' 'The Wiz (1978),' 'Life (1999)' and 'Man in the Mirror (2008)'
Performed on Broadway in 'Golden Boy' (1964-66) and 'Carry Me Back to Morningside Heights' (1968)

Why he might be annoying:

Much of his humor centered on his being 'big and tall.'
Fans of the show know him as 'Booger' and 'Buffalo Butt.'
He was probably named after religious fanatic John Brown.
His contractual obligations to Laugh-In prevented him from playing Lamont on Sanford and Son and the role went to Demond Wilson (he may or may not have been Norman Lear's first choice).

Why he might not be annoying:

His mentor was Sammy Davis, Jr.
He could do spot on impressions of Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong.
He recorded songs and performed in a band with saxophonist Sam 'The Man' Taylor.
His Bookman character became more likable and sympathetic in later seasons of Good Times.
He later admitted that the show's 'buffalo butt' jokes about his weight got old quickly and made him uncomfortable.
He did voice work for kids' cartoons like Plastic Man and Alvin & the Chipmunks.
He guested on Night Gallery, Maude, Chico and the Man, Archie Bunker’s Place, and Family Matters.
He collapsed after leaving a doctor's appointment for his pacemaker and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
