Why he might be annoying:

His first marriage to Elsie Rockefeller ended in divorce.
He was elected to fill the vacancy left by Joe McCarthy.
He was such a health nut that he scolded one of his aides for eating chocolate doughnuts.
He was sued for defamation by one Golden Fleece recipient.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had a reputation as a political maverick.
He supported anti-genocide legislation and consumer protection laws.
He opposed the Vietnam War.
He spoke out against fiscal waste and pork barrel projects.
He did not take any campaign contributions during his 1976 and 1982 re-election campaigns.
One of his sons died in infancy.
He had Alzheimer's disease toward the end of his life.
