The Resume

    (January 27, 1836-March 9, 1895)
Born in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary (now Lviv, Ukraine)
Best known work is ‘Venus in Furs’ (1869)

Why he might be annoying:

When he was 10, he spied on his aunt and her lover having sex.
He liked to have his mistresses wear furs while whipping him.
He found lovers for his wives and mistresses to betray him.
He tried to strangle his second wife.
He protested when psychologist Richard Krafft-Ebing coined the term ‘masochism.’
He officially died in 1895, but some biographers claim that he was secretly placed in an asylum and did not die until 1905.

Why he might not be annoying:

He graduated from law school at age 19.
Critics of his day considered him a successor to Goethe.
He was a utopian writer who espoused humanist ideals and denounced anti-Semitism in his works.
Convinced that illiteracy and poor education fostered anti-Semitism, he founded a Club for People’s Education.
He was the kind of guy who gave (and did everything else) until it hurt.
