The Resume

    (September 17, 1983-October 12, 1985)

Written and Created by Charles M. Schulz
Produced by Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelssohn
Directed by Bill Melendez and Phil Roman
Aired Saturday mornings on CBS (1983-86)
Opening song composed by Desirée Goyette & Ed Bogas
Premise: Featured the characters from Charles Schulz's Peanuts franchise, with storylines based on the comic strips
Re-aired on The Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, Nicktoons Network (all during the 1990s), and later Cartoon Network (2002-05)

Why The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show might be annoying:

It was a botched attempt by Schultz/Menendez to penetrate the Saturday Morning kids bloc.
Trying to go forward without Vince Guaraldi -- that's like Groucho and Chico doing a movie without Harpo...
Its catchy piano-based instrumental theme underwent an obnoxious revamp with lyrics that could have been written by Carole Bayer Sager.
It tends to get lumped in with the (higher quality) assorted Peanuts TV specials aired throughout the 1960s and 70s.
Mistaking a blue-tick beagle for a funny looking kid with a big nose? BS!
Part of the problem was allegedly the fast pace of production, as Schultz later said that they rushed and 'didn't have the time to do it right.'
It was phased out during the first season, after only 13 episodes, only to return in 1985 for five more (lower quality) episodes which functioned as weekend program 'fillers.'
It committed the unpardonable sin of depicting the mysterious Little Red Head Girl's face in its opening segment (why don't they just draw the Prophet Muhammad while they're at it?)
While the main characters (Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Woodstock, Lucy) were prominently featured, semi-regulars from the comic strip (Pig-Pen, Franklin, Violet, Frieda, 'the original' Patty) generally weren't given much to do other than walk-on cameos.

Why The Charlie Brown & Snoopy Show might not be annoying:

    Snoopy kicked ass!
It was warm, clean, and wholesome nostalgia.
It was one of the few full series produced by Bill Melendez.
That Blockhead -- everyone's a blockhead! Blockheads! Blockheads! Blockheads!
Like The Honeymooners, its reputation precedes it to the point where few people realize that it barely lasted even two seasons.
When it aired on Nicktoons Network, it was aired under the name, 'You're on Nickelodeon, Charlie Brown!'
Although lacking the depth of the original comic strip or the early specials, many of the sequences were quite funny and intelligently written (so much that the jokes tended to go over the heads of the younger audiences).
CBS had been attempting to persuade Schulz to do a 'Peanuts' series for years, but he had steadfastly refused on grounds of artistic integrity.
He eventually relented, but only on the condition that the series be based strictly on stories from his strip.
This was generally the case, although Schulz would write several original stories especially for the series.
It rectified some of the mistakes of the late 70s 'Charlie Brown' specials, among them the tendency to depict full-figured, speaking adults.
It also resisted the specials' established precedent of taking place in exotic locales (rather regularly taking place in the characters' ordinary neighborhood setting).
