Jackie Gleason used to introduce him as ‘the flower of the music world.’
When he was asked for a comment after The Beatles' debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, he said: ‘The only thing that’s different is the hair, as far as I can see. I give them a year.’
Ironically, very few - if any - of the songs he has written are well known contemporarily.

Why he might not be annoying:

His family emigrated to the USA during World War I.
He was a pianist in New York Ballrooms, then organized his own orchestra and toured the US in vaudeville.
He started out as a radio pianist, then became a music director and arranger for radio and for television networks.
His orchestra backed up singers Monica Lewis and the Five DeMarco Singers.
He was on the original board of governors of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and also served on the board of the New York Friars' Club.
