The Resume

    (February 19, 1821-July 8, 1875)
    Born in Lexington, Kentucky
Fought for the Union in the American Civil War
    Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Missouri's 1st district (March 4, 1857–June 25, 1860)
United States Senator from Missouri (January 20, 1871–March 4, 1873)
Son of Republican politician Francis Preston Blair

Why he might be annoying:

His statue at the Capitol's National Statuary Hall is a poor likeness of him.
He opposed slavery and the Confederate secession - but also opposed the Reconstruction and black suffrage (make up your mind!)
He also belonged to the anti-slavery Free Soiler Party despite owning slaves himself.
He vocally supported deportating and colonizing blacks in Liberia after emancipating them.
He lost as the Democratic candidate for vice president of Horatio Seymour in 1868 to Ulysses S. Grant.
When he was appointed to fill an unexpired Senate seat in 1870, he ran for a full term and lost two years later.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a gifted stump orator.
He served as a brigadier general during the Civil War while still a Senator.
He served as a commander at Vicksburg and later during Sherman's march through Georgia.
He was the only Free-Soiler from a slave state to win a seat in Congress.
He lost his campaign for reelection in 1858 but returned to Congress as a Republican in 1860.
He was credited with keeping secession sympathizers in Missouri in check, preventing the state from joining the Confederacy.
He was stricken with paralysis shortly after losing in 1872, and never again held major public office (he and his father died only a year apart).
He was an active supporter of Abraham Lincoln's presidential campaign in 1860.
