    She was the subject of an article titled: 'Circum-Atlantic Superabundance: Milk as World-Making in Alice Randall and Kara Walker' (wait - what?)
    She wrote a Gone With the Wind parody told from the viewpoint of Scarlett O'Hara's slave half-sister on the plantation.
    She was sued with publisher Houghton Mifflin in April 2001 by Margaret Mitchell's estate on the grounds of copyright infringement (the lawsuit was settled out of court).
    She wrote a draft script for a film adaptation of Zora Neale Hurston's 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' that went unused by Oprah and ABC (the final draft was written by Suzan Lori-Parks).

    Her second novel, 'Pushkin and the Queen of Spades,' was named as one of The Washington Post's Best fiction of 2004.
    Over 20 of her songs have been recorded, including several top 10 and top 40 records.
    She said: 'Mother-love is not inevitable. The good mother is a great artist ever creating beauty out of chaos.'
