Why he might be annoying:

He was tried for attempted murder -- at age nine.
He got started in acting when he dated a burlesque queen whose boss offered him a part in a drag revue.
During the filming of 'Dynamite,' he punched out director Cecil B. DeMille.
He turned down the part of Ben Cartwright in Bonanza.

He was acquitted of the attempted murder. Also, the man he shot at had run over his dog.
He served with the Army Corps of Engineers in World War I.
After being mauled by a lion while filming 'East of Java' he lost his leading man status due to extensive scarring on his neck (1935).
He became a respected character actor who was nominated three times for the Oscar as best supporting actor.
