Motown Records refused to put her face on the cover of her first album, fearing nobody would buy it because she was a white woman singing soul.
She's often confused with Brazilian jazz singer Tania Maria.
Her nicknames include 'White Chocolate,' 'Vanilla Child' and 'The Ivory Queen of Soul.'

She is a former protege and ex-girlfriend of Rick James.
She is a multi-instrumentalist, emphasizing guitar and piano.
She writes and produces her own material.
In the early 1980's, she and Motown Records got into a bitter lawsuit. The result was the 'Teena Marie Law,' stating that a label cannot keep an artist under contract without releasing music by him or her.
She was the rare white artist to have more R&B hits than pop hits.
