    She lived most of her life in Tucson, Arizona
    Her religion was unclear and has been labeled Mormon, Methodist or charismatic.

    For years she taught school while writing.
    She taught Japanese children at an internment camp during World War Two.
    She was one of the first prominent female science fiction writers.
    Focusing on ordinary people, she showed that science fiction need not be about laser guns and robots.
    'The People' (1972), a TV movie starring William Shatner, was based on her work.
