Mascot

The Resume

    (November 13, 2004-July 9, 2006)
    Born in Germany
Official mascots of the FIFA World Cup
    Goleo is an anthromorphic lion
Pille is a talking smiling soccer ball
Designed by the Jim Henson Company

Why he might be annoying:

    Goleo doesn't wear pants.
Many were critical of the use of a lion as the mascot since the lion is more representative of England or the Netherlands rather than Germany.
Goleo looks pretty scary and freaky compared to World Cup Willie.
    Even Pille looks bizarre.
Pille is actually the German word for 'pill.'
One month before the 2006 World Cup, the Bavarian toy company who held their licensing declared bankruptcy. Possibly because of demanding licensing fees too high.

Why he might not be annoying:

'Pille' is common German sports jargon for a soccer ball.
Goleo was featured in the video for the Bob Sinclar/Gary Pile dance song 'Love Generation.'
Pille knows all there is to know about soccer.
Appeal of the two was slow at first but grew hugely once World Cup 2006 started.
They would top a FIFA.com poll in 2008 of the top World Cup mascots of the past 20 years.
