Why he might be annoying:

He was the stereotypical eccentric and crotchety old man.
He ignored the orders of geologists and the government.
He was the only person to stay in Spirit Lake.
He came to Spirit Lake after he got in trouble with gangsters while bootlegging alcohol in the 1920s.
He said, 'I think the whole damn thing is over exaggerated. Spirit Lake and Mount St. Helens are my life. You couldn't pull me out with a mule team.'
He stubbornly refused to believe any evidence to the contrary.
He lived with 16 cats and a large supply of alcohol.
He owned a custom-made pink Cadillac.
He shared his name with a certain President of the United States.
He was vaporized when Mount St. Helens did indeed erupt (1980).

Why he might not be annoying:

He fought in World War I.
He was a successful entrepreneur.
He didn't give a shit what people thought about him.
He was determined to wait out the volcanic hell storm.
He lived a full life and probably wouldn't have lived much longer had he evacuated.
He earned his fifteen minutes.
Harry Truman's family sued (and won) after he was killed, because the Sheriff's Office could not prove that they warned him.
