Why he might be annoying:

    He was banned from Major League Baseball for four years after leaving the Giants to play in the Mexican League (1946-50).
    He was nicknamed 'the Barber' for giving batters close shaves with inside pitches.
    Despite his nickname, he usually sported stubble while pitching.
    He committed adultery while his first wife was dying of cancer.
    He was such a distant father that his youngest son Joey claimed to have no memories of him before age nine.

    He was the last person to play for three New York baseball teams.
    He was known for clutch pitching under pressure.
    Despite his head hunter reputation, he was consistently below the league average in hit batters.
    Art Pennington, a former Negro Leaguer who played with Maglie in the Mexican League, called him 'the most unprejudiced white man I ever met.'
