    Born in Berlin, Germany
    Wrote 'Reason and Revolution' (1941), 'Eros and Civilization' (1955), 'The One-Dimensional Man' (1964) and 'Counter-Revolution and Revolt' (1972)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a Marxist.
    He was the favorite philosopher of violent 60s radicals like the Baader-Meinhoff gang.
    His essay 'Repressive Tolerance' (1965) advocated a discriminatory form of tolerance that would prevent repressive ideas from being voiced.
    His third wife was a former student 40 years his junior.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He had to flee Nazi Germany.
    He became a naturalized US citizen (1940).
    During World War II he produced anti-Nazi propaganda for the Office of War Information.
    He criticized Soviet Communism as much as Western capitalism.
