Why she might be annoying:

    She originally wanted to be a doctor, but worried that earning a medical degree would take longer and be more expensive than earning a PhD in science.
    She said that the pressure and expectations from working on the front line of AIDS research was 'very tough psychologically.'
    After the development of anti-retroviral drugs to treat AIDS, she fell into a depression and temporarily cut back on her public commitments (1996).

Why she might not be annoying:

    She worked in developing nations through the World Health Organization.
    She criticized Pope Benedict XVI for claiming that condoms were ineffective at preventing the transmission of AIDS.
    She was named a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor (2013).
    She said that when she meets people with AIDS, 'I forget my mood. I say, 'Let's go on. Let's continue. This is real life. Don't think about yourself.''
