Why he might be annoying
Though born in midtown Manhattan, he had a thick Brooklyn accent.
He looked more like a palooka prize fighter than an actor.
He smoked.
When asked what the key to his career was he replied, 'Save a buck or two and keep on acting - that's all there is to it.'
Why he might not be annoying
He was a batboy for the New York Yankees and a personal favorite of Babe Ruth, whom he went on to portray in the film 'The Babe Ruth Story.'
His best friend and sometime film co-star was Alan Ladd.
He was a descendent of composer Felix Mendelssohn and was given a framed document signed by the composer on the TV show 'This is Your Life' (November 9, 1955).
He has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
