    He never played a game in the professional ranks.
    He was nicknamed 'Trader Cliff' as a result of his penchant to swing multiplayer deals.
    He faced intense criticism from both Flames fans, who felt he gutted their team and from Maple Leafs fans who felt he was turning their team into the Flames of the east.
    Some Coyote fans felt he got lowballed in the Nikolai Khabibulin trade.
    He had a habit of signing or trading for players who were past their prime.

    He was the first general manager in the history of the Flames franchise in both Atlanta and Calgary.
    He was the first general manager in NHL history to sign a player directly from the Soviet Union.
    He was one of the first general managers to heavily recruit players from the U.S. College hockey ranks.
    He was the architect of the Flames Stanley Cup winning team (1989).
    He was credited with revitalizing interest in the Maple Leafs with the 10 player trade that brought Doug Gilmour to the team and the hiring of Pat Burns as head coach.
