He dressed strange and flamboyant, wearing his yellow gloves and flowered waistcoats, accompanying his long hair.

He is critically acclaimed for his style of easy rhymes and melodies.
He started school at 3 years old and graduate college at 19.
He was asked to be the first professor of modern languages at Bowdoin College.
As part of his professorship he was to travel to Europe and was scheduled to meet with important people of England and France.
However he found it much more enjoyable and educational to meet with the commoners and peasants of Europe and befriend many of them.
He became a professor at Harvard (1834).
He was the first American writer to write of an Indian theme, 'The Song of Haiwatha.'
Both of his wives died before him.
