The Resume

    (February 10, 2020-August 1, 2022)
    Cable news channel
    Headquartered in Tallahassee, Florida
Founders: J.C. Watts and Bob Brillante
    Owned by Allen Media Group
Filed for bankruptcy in March 2022

Why The Black News Channel (BNC) might be annoying:

Its network logo looked like a hieroglyphic.
It suffered from persistently low viewership.
It’s existence was pretty obsolete (its target demographic already had channels like TV One and BET to choose from).
It was subjected to a class action gender discrimination lawsuit filed by thirteen female employees who alleged a hostile work environment and a gender pay gap (January 5, 2022).
It shut down after its main billionaire backer Shahid Khan declined to fund the startup (it was merged into TheGrio TV).
It left roughly 230 people abruptly jobless and didn’t pay them (staff members and employees weren’t even notified ahead of time).

Why The Black News Channel (BNC) might not be annoying:

Its goal was to speak to local urban issues affecting the Black community (as opposed to BET that focused more on pop culture and entertainment).
It provided job security to Marc Lamont Hill after his firing from CNN.
It had the bad luck to be unveiled within less than a month of the Coronavirus pandemic.
It had been a passion project of J. C. Watts since the early 2000’s.
Watts spent nearly two decades raising capital from investors and silent partners to make it a reality (which must make its failure even more disappointing).
