The Resume

    (August 2, 1925-May 17, 2013)
Born in Mercedes, Buenos Aires, Argentina
    Attended National Military College (1941)
    Commissioned sublieutenant in infantry (1944)
Advisor to Argentine embassy in Washington (1956-1958)
Commander of the Military College (1971-1973)
Commander-in-Chief of the Army (August 1975)
    President of Argentina (March 29, 1976-March 28, 1981)
Convicted of widespread human rights abuses, including kidnappings

Why he might be annoying:

He was nicknamed ‘The Pink Panther’ or ‘The Bone’.
He set up a military dictatorship in Argentina that was responsible for the tortures, deaths, and disappearances of thousands of real or suspected dissidents as part of the Dirty War (1976-1983).
The excessive human rights abuses of his regime received widespread condemnation at home and abroad.
He and his three military successors outlawed labor unions and strikes, dissolved the judiciary and most civil liberties.
His dialogues with civilian leaders resulted only in the strengthening of his regime.
He argued with Pinochet over the Picton, Lennox, and Nueva islands (1977-1978).
Even after war was condemned by Pope John Paul II, the dispute wasn’t fully settled until 1984.
He frustrated the ambitions of his economic minister, José Alfredo Martínez de Hoz, who wanted to introduce neoliberal economic policies, resulting in the increase of Argentina’s foreign debt.
He spent only five years in prison, even though he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
He didn’t repent his crimes and even called for ‘full vindication’ of the military.

Why he might not be annoying:

He originally didn’t intend to get involved in politics.
He eliminated two left-wing terrorist organizations, the People's Revolutionary Army and The Montoneros.
His repressive policies were initially meant to combat Communism.
President Carlos Menem pardoned him (1990).
He spent the later years of his life under house arrest.
