He appeared in ads for Coke a week after winning the Olympic gold medal.
He qualified for the 1981 Canada Cup, but missed the tournament because of injuries.
He was charged with vehicular homicide after colliding with a car, killing a passenger in the other vehicle (May, 1982).
He was arrested for speeding and DUI (February, 1986).

Why he might not be annoying:

He led Boston University to the NCAA championship (1978).
He stopped 36 of 39 shots during the Olympic match against the Soviet Union.
After the US defeated Finland to win the gold medal, he memorably skated around the rink, looking for his widowed father in the stands.
He was acquitted on the vehicular homicide charges after testifying that he had tried to avoid the other car after it swerved towards him (September, 1982).
