Monarch

The Resume

    (May 21, 1527-September 13, 1598)
Member of the house of Hasburg
    King of Spain (1556-1598)
King of Naples and Sicily (1554-1558)
    King of Portugal (1580-1598)

Why he might be annoying:

He was the self-proclaimed leader of the Counter-Reformation.
He did not reside in Spain until his father's death.
He inherited Hasburg lands in Italy, all of Burgandy, and the entire Spanish empire upon his father's death.
He was married to Queen Mary I of England.
After Mary's death, he tried to marry her half-sister Queen Elizabeth I (she later became his #1 nemesis).
He was accused of ordering the imprisonment and murder of his first son.
He has been married four times.
He used the execution of Mary Queen of Scots as an excuse to invade England.
He sent an 'invincible' armada of 130 warships to destroy England, but he lost.
He failed to suppress the rebellion in the Netherlands.
He drained the Spanish treasury to pay for his wars against Protestantism and Islam.
He constantly meddled in European politics.
He was involved in the French Wars of Religion.
Pirates were always plundering his gold shipments from the New World.
He crippled Spain's economy by expelling all the Jews and the Muslims who happened to be Spain's best craftsmen and financiers.
He inherited the throne of Portugal when its King died without an heir.
He left Spain bankrupt when he died.
His reign was largely a failure.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the only son of Charles V to survive childhood.
He was freed from ruling the unruly states within the Holy Roman Empire.
He crushed the Ottoman Empire's navy at the Battle of Lepanto.
The Philippines was named after him after Spanish conquest.
The Spanish established a colony in Florida under his reign.
Spain was the largest and most powerful empire in the world under Philip II.
He was Roman Catholic Church's champion against the forces of Islam and Protestantism.
The novel 'Don Quixote' parodied and satirized Spain's misadventures in England and the Netherlands under Philip II's rule.
