Why she might be annoying:

She originally acted as Barbara Nichols before adopting her childhood nickname as her new first name.
In most of her early films, she portrayed maids.
Gretchen Franklin portrayed Else Garnett in the 'Comedy Playhouse' presentation that served as the pilot episode of 'Till Death Do Us Part'; Nichols got the role only because Franklin was unable to get out of a contract to appear in a West End play.
The British Film Institute described her as 'doughy faced.'

Why she might not be annoying:

She entertained the troops during World War II.
She proved an effective foil to Warren Mitchell as Alf Garnett.
When the BBC refused to let Alf call Elsie 'a silly cow,' she remarked that it was 'a lot of silly fuss about a silly moo.' Writer Johnny Speight overheard her, and substituted 'silly moo,' which became one of the series' catchphrases.
During filming of 'In Sickness and in Health,' she was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and had to use a wheelchair. Her illness was written into the scripts.
