Why he might be annoying:

He was a mercenary and fought for America against the British (despite being French).
He hated the British because his father was killed by them in the Battle of Minden (he was two - 1759).

Why he might not be annoying:

He was orphaned at 11, when his mom died.
He loved liberty and felt Europe has little chance to embrace that concept.
He came to America and assisted George Washington, so that a real place of liberty could exist.
Being part of the king's brigade during the French Revolution (1792), he was forced to flee when radicals took over.
He was one of General George Washington's most trusted strategists.
He fought for America for no salary and at his own expense.
He returned to America and took a plot of American soil (1824).
Ten years later, he was buried in France with the American soil (1834).
