She started as a clarinetist before becoming a singer.
After a series of successful albums for Atlantic Records, she left to join a label started by her manager; the new label went bankrupt a year later, derailing her career momentum.
He career was also hampered by heavy drinking.
Many of the master tapes from her Atlantic albums were lost in a warehouse fire.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her voice was usually described as 'warm,' 'lush' and 'smoky.'
She quit drinking in the late 70s and launched a successful comeback in Japan.
She was with her companion Lori Muscarelle for 47 years until her death.
Jazz historian Marc Myers wrote, 'You never got the feeling with Chris that she was a helpless female, but you never got the feeling she was bossy either. And, as a result, almost everyone who heard her fell in love with her.'
