Why he might be annoying
His nomination to the Supreme Court outraged many liberals.
His opinions about gun control, separation of church and state, and freedom of speech are controversial.
His detractors accuse him of sexism and racism.
One legal scholar said: ‘Not since Bob Bork have you had a nominee who has the ability to coalesce all these [liberal] groups.’
He’s nicknamed ‘Little Nino’ and ‘Scalito’ because of his ideological similarities to arch-conservative justice Antonin Scalia.
Some say President Bush nominated him to throw a bone to his conservative base because of PR problems.
He fought to limit employees’ rights to maternity leave and sick time.
He was accused of showing legal favoritism to a company in which he owned stock.
Senator Chuck Schumer of New York actually called him ‘Judge Scalia.'
Why he might not be annoying
He has a truly distinguished legal background.
He became a federal court judge at 39.
Conservative Americans were largely thrilled with his nomination.
He is known as tough on organized crime and drug trafficking.
He argued that Muslim police officers should be allowed to wear beards.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
A blend of coffee at a Newark café is named after him.
His daughter is cute.
