Why she might be annoying:

She was at the center of controversy after W. Kamau Bell wrote a CNN op-ed calling for Michael Phelps to step down as the American flag-bearer at the Olympics and instead cede the honor to her as a symbolic gesture.
She was defeated by Cecilia Berder of France in the second round in the Women's Individual saber event.
She contested several calls with the referee and exited the fencing area in tears before returning to meet the media.
She was criticized for calling the United States a dangerous place for Muslims on foreign soil (it was during a Rio interview), and for saying that she did 'not feel safe' as a Muslim living in America.

Why she might not be annoying:

Her father was a police officer.
She started fencing a the age of thirteen.
She is the first American athlete to compete in the Olympics wearing a hijab.
She gave First Lady Michelle Obama a fencing lesson at an Olympic lead-up event in Times Square.
She received the second most votes from her fellow Olympians to be the flag bearer in Rio, very nearly beating out Michael Phelps.
When she was asked her opinion about Donald Trump and his anti-Muslim rhetoric, she answered: 'Who? I'm sorry, what did you say? I don’t know him.' (Okay, Mariah!)
