The Resume

    (October 15, 1922-October 23, 1969)
    Born in Richmond, Virginia
Recorded the singles ‘The Morning Side of the Mountain’ (1951), ‘It’s All in the Game’ (1951), ‘Please, Mr. Sun’ (1952), ‘You Win Again’ (1952), ‘Now and Then, There’s a Fool Such As l’ (1953), ‘Secret Love’ (1954), ‘It’s All in the Game’ (1958), ‘Love Is All We Need’ (1958), ‘Please, Mr. Sun’ (1959), ‘The Morning Side of the Mountain’ (1959), ‘My Melancholy Baby’ (1959), and ‘I Really Don’t Want to Know’ (1960)

Why he might be annoying:

On his early crooning hits, he sounded derivative of Nat ‘King’ Cole.
He had gone three years without making a record when MGM brought him back to the studio to record stereo versions of his old hits (1958).
His grave went unmarked until 2008.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was seventeen, he had a twice weekly radio show on WRNL in Richmond.
He wrote ‘That Chick’s Too Young to Fry,’ which became a hit for Louis Jordan.
When he recorded the stereo version of ‘It’s All in the Game,’ instead of copying the original arrangement, he gave it a contemporary rock beat.
The new version hit #1 on the Hot 100, the Billboard Rhythm & Blues chart, and the British singles chart.
Universal Music Group, which had bought MGM Records, settled a long-running suit by the singer’s estate by paying $229,000 in back royalties (2004).
Trivia note: The music for ‘It’s All in the Game’ had been composed in 1911 as ‘Melody in A Major’ by Charles G. Dawes, making him the only US Vice-President (and only Nobel Peace Prize laureate) to have written a #1 single.
