Why he might be annoying:

He began swimming competitively only because he was too small for the high school football team.
He was 'delighted' to contract mononucleosis in 1965 because 'I didn't have to train, I didn't have to give speeches.'
He retired from swimming at age 22, telling reporters, 'I'm finished with water -- in fact, I may not take a bath or shower for another two years.'
Commenting about being invited to the inauguration of fellow Skull and Bones member George W. Bush, he said 'It felt as if we were a bunch of college kids who had broken into the White House, and at any moment some adult was going to say, 'You kids get out of here.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first American since Jesse Owens to win four gold medals at a single Olympics.
He was the first person to swim the 200-meter freestyle in under two minutes.
He won the Sullivan Award for outstanding amateur athlete by the largest margin in its history.
He was a member of the first group of inductees into both the International Swimming Hall of Fame (1965) and US Olympics Hall of Fame (1983).
He became a successful real estate developer after retiring from swimming.
