The Resume

    (July 31, 1899- )
Headquartered in Troy, Michigan (from 1962 to 2005)
Founded as S. S. Kresge Corporation (renamed Kmart Corporation in 1977)
First Kmart store opened on March 1, 1962, in Garden City, Michigan
Subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corporation (as of 2004 )

Why Kmart might be annoying:

For years, they had a tie-in with Martha Stewart.
Rosie O'Donnell was its main spokesperson in the 1990s.
It deliberately omits the dash from its name, despite being regularly misspelled as 'K-Mart.'
Its business prospects suffered in the late-1990's due to increased competition, digital advancement, and aging stores.
It had a century-long feud with Sears that culminated in a corporate merger.
It was sued by Target and Sega video games in the same year (2001).
It declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2002 and again in 2018.
The hyped 'Blue Light Special' often resulted in customers clogging store traffic while waiting for it to be announced (it has been repeatedly discontinued over the years).

Why Kmart might not be annoying:

The phrase 'attention Kmart shoppers,' has become a pop culture reference.
At its peak in 1994, it operated over 2,500 stores globally.
It aired commercials featuring Penny Marshall and the cast of Sesame Street.
It pioneered the Blue Light Special concept.
Rosie O'Donnell mutually terminated her contract with Kmart after gun enthusiasts called her out on being a spokesperson for the country's largest gun retailer despite being virulently anti-Second Amendment.
It was pointed out, though, that Kmart sells hunting rifles, not handguns or assault weapons (which O'Donnell supports) and does so legally.
It was the dominant retail chain in America for over a quarter of a century until being overtaken by Wal-Mart.
