Baseball Player

The Resume

    (May 13, 1933-August 16, 2002)
    Born in Ashland, Ohio
Catcher for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1957-67), Minnesota Twins (1968-69) and Washington Senators (1970)
    Six-time All-Star (1958,1961-62*,1969; *MLB held two All-Star Games in 1961 and 1962)
    Two-time Golden Glove winner (1961,1966)
Best-known for an altercation in which Giants pitcher Juan Marichal struck him over the head with a bat, triggering a fourteen-minute on-field brawl (August 22, 1965)

Why he might be annoying:

He dropped out of college and turned pro after bad grades left him ineligible for sports.
He was one of several Dodgers to sing 'See the USA in Your Chevrolet' in commercials, prompting Dodgers announcer Jerry Doggett to declare that his 'singing career was destined to go absolutely nowhere.'
His return throw to pitcher Sandy Koufax brushed Marichal's ear. (Roseboro admitted years later that it was deliberate retaliation for Marichal having thrown brushback pitches at Maury Wills and Ron Fairly.)
He refused an attempt by team officials to arrange a conciliatory handshake when the teams met again next spring training (April 3, 1966).
He said, 'A ballplayer would like to be remembered for something better than a bloody brawl, but that's what everyone always remembers.'
He lost the money he earned from baseball in a series of bad investments.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the Dodgers' starting catcher in four World Series.
He eventually forgave and befriended Marichal.
He made a public appeal for the Baseball Writers Association of America to not hold the clubbing against Marichal after the pitcher was passed over for election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first two years of eligibility.
When Marichal was elected to the Hall of Fame, he thanked Roseboro in his induction speech.
