    He unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the United State Senate against Phil Gramm (1984).
    He reportedly violated a federal conflict-of-interest law by disclosing purchased stock after the deadline.

    He earned his law degree, as well as his undergraduate degree, from the University of Texas.
    He served as an Associate Justice on the Texas Supreme Court for 5 years (1989-1994).
    As of January 3, 2019, he was the last remaining white male Democrat representing Texas in the US House of Representatives.
