Notable paintings include ‘The Charging Chasseur’ (1812), ‘The Raft of the Medusa’ (1819), ‘The Derby of Epsom’ (1821), ‘Portrait of an Insane Woman’ (1822) and ‘Portrait of a Kleptomaniac’ (1822)

Why he might be annoying:

He was a dandy.
He had an affair with his aunt.
To accurately render the flesh tones of dead people, he brought severed limbs to his studio to study their decay.
When the government comissioned him to paint on the theme of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, he hired Eugene Delacroix to paint the work, then signed his own name to it.
He died from the combined effects of tuberculosis and injuries from multiple falls from horses.

Why he might not be annoying:

When the Louvre declined to buy 'The Raft of the Medusa,' he exhibited it in London, where over 50,000 people paid to see it, earning him far more than he would have gotten had the Louvre purchased it.
He was one of the first artists to use lithography.
He was considered one of the founders of the Romantic movement in art.
