Animal

The Resume

    (1956-March 29, 1973)
    Born in Stuttgart, Germany
    Dachshund
Owned by photographer David Douglas Duncan
Lived with Pablo Picasso for six years (1958-64)
Featured in several Picasso paintings, including 15 studies of Velazquez's 'Las Meninas'
Subject of Duncan's book 'Picasso and Lump: A Dachshund's Odyssey' (2006)
    Name pronounced 'Loomp'

Why he might be annoying:

His name is German for 'rascal.'
Duncan said of his stay with Picasso, 'Hell, that little dog took over. He ran the damn house.'
He would interrupt Picasso's work by bringing in a stone and insisting that the artist kick it away to be chased.
Picasso bought a respite by creating a cardboard rabbit that the dog took into the garden and ate, which, considering the prices fetched by anything associated with Picasso, made it history's most valuable chew toy.
One his favorite spots for taking a whizz was against a bronze Picasso statue in the garden.

Why he might not be annoying:

Duncan originally acquired Lump as a companion for his Afghan hound, but as Duncan noted, 'That Afghan would roll Lump around the apartment like a tennis ball.'
Picasso said, 'Lump, he’s not a dog, he’s not a little man, he’s something else.'
After a vet diagnosed Lump as paralyzed (due to a spinal problem common in dachshunds), Picasso gave up on him (1964).
Duncan took him another vet who successfully treated him, although afterwards he tended to walk 'a bit like a drunken sailor.'
He died one week before Picasso.
