Why he might be annoying:

He had the Tribune use simplified spellings ('fantom,' 'crum,' 'frate,' etc.) in articles and headlines.
He editorialized about Mussolini, 'We can use that sort of government here.' (1928)
An opponent of FDR, he used the phrase 'so-called' in front of legit New Deal agencies such as the National Labor Relations Board.
The Tribune was voted 'most flagrant in angling or weighting the news' in a poll of Washington press correspondents (1944).
He formed the American Party to back 'patriotic candidates' like Senator Joseph McCarthy (1952).
He was so ticked off by a judge's decision in Rhode Island that he ordered a star torn out of the American flag that flew outside the Tribune offices. (He relented when his lawyers told him that flag mutilation was illegal.)
One critic called him 'the greatest mind of the fourteenth century.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He earned the Distinguished Service Medal during World War I.
In his paper, he launched crusades against Chicago's gangsters and corrupt politicians.
He quadrupled the Tribune's circulation to over a million, until it rivaled the New York Times as America's largest daily paper.
He chaired the American Newspaper Publishers Association's Committee on Free Speech and championed a number of legal cases concerning freedom of the press.
Time magazine noted, 'His skillful and intensely opinionated brand of newspapering might often be wrong, but it was never dull.'
