    Named to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame (2002)

Why he might be annoying:

    He called the NAMBLA Bulletin 'one of the most intelligent discussions of sexuality I've ever found.'
    He wrote a memoir about having sex with men in Time Square's porno theaters.
    His name was misspelled by his publishers on the title page of his short story collection 'Driftglass.'
    He wrote for 'Wonder Woman' comics during the early 70s period when she abandoned her superpowers and became a secret agent.
    Philip K. Dick said of his best-selling novel, 'Dhalgren,' 'I just started reading it and said this is the worst trash I've ever read. And I threw it away.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was the first successful sci-fi author to be either black or openly gay.
    He won back-to-back Nebula Awards for best novel (1966-67).
    His novels have been compared to the works of James Joyce and Herman Melville.
    Theodore Sturgeon called 'Dhalgren,' 'The very best ever to come out of the science fiction field ... a literary landmark.'
