The Resume

    (August 15, 1992-June 11, 2000)
    Aired on Nickelodeon
    Horror anthology series
Premise: A group of teens calling themselves 'The Midnight Society' spends each episode sitting around a campfire swapping scary stories
Midnight Society members included Daniel DeSanto, Ross Hull, Rachel Blanchard, Elisha Cuthbert, and JoAnna Garcia
Standout episodes include 'Tale of the Dark Music,' 'Tale of the Silver Sight,' 'Tale of Watcher's Woods,' 'Tale of the Dollmaker,' 'Tale of the Ghastly Grinner,' 'Tale of Laughing in the Dark,' 'Tale of the Thirteenth Floor,' 'Tale of the Lonely Ghost,' and 'Tale of the Dead Man's Float'

Why Are You Afraid of the Dark? might be annoying:

It was in low-key competition with Goosebumps.
Gilbert Gottfried guested ('Tale of Station 109.1').
Its opening was legitimately creepy (more fitting for Unsolved Mysteries than a Nick show).
The substance in the bag the kids threw into the campfire to make it smoke-up at the beginning of each story was actually non-dairy creamer.
Episodes were inconsistent in terms of tone and content (ranging from campy fluff to full-on Nightmare Fuel for kids).
The character of David was written out of the show in Season 3 because Nathaniel Moreau had salary disputes with producers.

Why Are You Afraid of the Dark? might not be annoying:

The show's opening catchphrase, 'submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society,' was direct homage to Rod Serling in The Twilight Zone.
It featured guest appearances from Melissa Joan Hart ('Tale of the Frozen Ghost'), TTatyana Ali ('The Tale of the Quicksilver') and Tia and Tamera Mowry ('The Tale of the Chameleons').
Ryan Gosling was offered a place in the Midnight Society but was unavailable (He later did a guest spot in 'The Tale of Station 109.1').
The show was hailed for its diversity in characters and stories (it even received an NAACP Image Award nomination).
The episode 'Tale of the Midnight Madness' had a premise revolving around a screening of the horror classic 'Nosferatu' in which Count Orlock comes to life (it is creator DJ McHale's favorite episode).
Many of the episodes, while written for children, still hold up with adult audiences.
The ghost stories, while dark, usually had happy endings and taught valuable lessons to the Midnight Society members.
